Veera vasantharayar mandapam(Sree Meenakshi Temple)

Veera Vasantharayar Mandapam(Sree Meenakshi Temple) Going east from this tower,we come to a big mandapam with forty six pillars.This is called the Veeravasantharayar mandapam after it builder Muthuveerappa naicker elder brother of Thirumalai Naick. Facing the idol of Lord sundareswarar' this is a of Nandhi,(bull) Lord Siva's conveyance. There is a tell arch of lights in this mandapam.Thi wa donated by the Maruthu Pandyas,the lights are being maintained by the Sivaganga Devathanam. There are fancy shops on both sides of this mandapam. On some of the pillars in this mandapam .we find scenes depicting Lord Siva as the killer of the God of Death for saving Markandeya, a hunter carrying his wife on his shoulders ,majestic pose of Lord Siva ,dancing Badrakali and Dwarabalagas.

Parrot Cage Mandapam (Sree Meenakshi Temple) Next to the swing mandapam and just all the entrance to the Amman Sannathi is the Parrot Cage  Hall (kilikoodu mandapam).Some parrots kept in a big cage .Now this cage is in the entrance of the south. These parrots provide delight to the children.The kids talk something to the parrots,Those creatures repeat the sounds .This gives pleasure to the younger generation.The parrot is a sacred bird and is often shown in company with other Gods and Goddessess.Particularly ,goddessess are always seen with a parrot in their left hand.Obviously it means presence of peace and happiness. Swamy Temple (sivan sannathi) On each side of the entrance to the swamy temple (Lord Sundareswarar's Temple)is a statue of a Dwarabalaga (Guard engraved out of a single.12 feet high installed on base of 4 feet.) On the pillars near these Dwarabalagas,we see Lord Siva with five heads seated beside His consort and Goddess Meenakshi with five heads. There are also the statues of the saints,Appar,Sundarar,Sambandar and Manickavasagar. Amman Temple (Amman Sannathi) From the Parrot cage Mandapam one can go into Sree Meenakshi's sanctum sanctorum.There is a small tower at this entrance .It is three  storeyed tower ,forty feet high.Its base is 27 feet long and 20 feet broad.There are 476 sculptures in this tower.This tower can be seen only from the eastern side of the Golden Lily Tank.This tower is called Vembathur.Tower after its builder,Ananda Thandava nambi of Vembathur,Inside the tower's gate there are two paintings on wooden planks one depicts Sree  Meenakshi's wedding  and other Her crowing.  Non hindus are not allowed to go beyond the tower entrance. Golden Lily Tank -Sree Meenakshi Temple (pottramarai kulam) From the Mudali Pillai Mandapam ,we come to an important part of Sree Meenakshi Temple.A beautiful rectangular tank face its right across its northern bank is situated the sanctum sanctorum of sree Meenakshi.There are big stone corridors on the four sides of this tank. The Golden Lily Tank is 165 feet long and 120 feet broad .There are stone steps on all the four sides leading almost to its bottom .The tank is filled with water during the major part of the year.Only very rarely does the tank get dry. Before entering sanctum sanctorum .Hindus who go into the temple bare footed,wash their feet in the tank's water. After washing their feet (and incidentally perhaps their sins)the pious Hindus sprinkle some water on their heads take a handful of the water,get up the steps spray the water on a step ,stand on the portion ,face themselves towards the main deity put their palms together and pray with ey

Swing Mandapam

Swing Mandapam On the western side of the Golden lily tank ,there is a small  mandapam built in black marble.This is called the swing Mandapam (Nall) or oonjal Mandapam. Every Friday evening the golden idols of sree Meenakshi and Lord Sundareswara are placed in a swing on the dais of this mandapam.A  String is tied to this swing .A man sits on the floor in front of the swing and pulls it so that the swing moves to front.Now this mandapam is decorated fully with design mirrors. On other days ,Tamil hymns are sung by odhuvars who sit in front of the swing dias. The six shrines of Lord Muruga are painted  on the side walls above the dias opposite the swing mandapam,there is a small mandapam here,we can see artistic paintings painted during Rani Mangamma's time .The statues of Rani Mangamma her minister Ramapayy and grandson Vijaya ranga chockanathar,also find  a place in this mandapam.

Mudali Pillai Mandapam

Mudali Pillai Mandapam Next to this tower ,is the Mudali Pillai Mandapam.This is also called Mudali Mandapam and dark Mandapam.It is 60 feet broad.It was built in 1963 byKadandhai Mudaliar. On both sides of this Mandapam,there are pillars with beautiful statues of women. A Legendary story is related about these women.Once the wives of the saints of Tharuga forest fell in love with Lord Siva when He appeared before them in the form of BIKSHADANAR(begger).They were so enamoured with love that they stood spell bound by the Lord's be witching  beauty and grace. In such a gratitude they did not even notice the slipping of the clothes from their waists.The sculpture  has showed  a superb skill in making these statues .The statue of Lord Bikshadanar also exhibits the inordinate efficiency of the artist.There is a statue of a saint of  the Tharuga forest.There is also a statue of Mohini (the Lady who throws charm).The idols of Ganesha and Subramania also find a place in

Description of Sree Meenakshi Temple (A Self Explantory) Sree  Meenakshi Temple is one of the greatest temple of South India.It is situated in the heart of the city of Madurai.Its towers can be seen even from a distance' An aerial view of the temple will be simply grand. Goddess Meenakshi is the main deity of the temple,Hence it has become customary to go into the temple through the entrance on the eastern side,facing Sree Meenakshi.
